Fatou, Female Gorilla
Div. II, Honorable mention, Acrylic/Oil Painting
Fatou's story captured me. At 67, she is the oldest known living gorilla. She resides in the zoo in Berlin, Germany. She was born on January 1, 1957, in the wild, and was brought from West Africa to France by a sailor in 1959. The story is that he ran up a bar tab that he couldn't pay and left her behind as payment. The bar owner then called the Berlin Zoo. On October 30, 1974, she gave birth to Duffle, the first gorilla to be raised in Berlin. They just celebrated her 67th birthday. Her expression just seemed so wise and "grandmotherly" to me.
