Union Soldiers- Building Road for floating bridge
Div. II, Third place, Drawing
This is a pen and ink drawing was inspired from an early historical photo. I changed the drawing to a "Z" type composition with an emphasis on the soldiers toiling and building a road. I varied the values to provide movement and depth of the working men. I was inspired by my memory of when I was working with a road crew clearing out fields using pickaxe, yoyos and shovels in the pepper fields of Avery Island. Another inspiration was the floating bridge. I have a nephew who served in Iraq and described his adventures building floating bridges and this picture will be a gift to him in gratitude of his service.
