Beetle Secret Keeper Div. I Third place, Studio Fine Craft

The Beetle Secret Keeper is wheel thrown from iron rich stoneware clay and decorated in iron oxide stain washes, and food-safe glazes. The beetle is hand sculpted from paperclay I mix myself from my standard clay body.

As a native Texan my inspiration comes from the beauty found in nature all around us here in Texas. I have been making functional pottery and sculptural pieces since 2004 and I relish combining function and sculpture into a single piece, thus bringing art into our daily lives and routine. I chose the beetle as the focus for this lidded jar because they are often one of the more overlooked, unloved and hidden insects and yet are such a vital part of our ecosystem.
