The Space Between

The Space Between, Division I Professional
The Space Between Div. I Third place, Sculpture
The Space Between is an installation of handmade hexagon tiles made from iron rich stoneware clay and decorated in iron oxide stain washes, and food-safe glazes. Some of the elements on the tiles such as the peach pit is made by a mold I made myself from found objects. The snails are hand sculpted.

As a native Texan my inspiration comes from the beauty found in nature all around us here in Texas. This installation arrangement can be changed since each tile is hung individually however the arrangement in the photos allows the trails of the creatures to line up across the individual tiles as a whole. My work often depicts elements of nature and in particular creatures and plants found in Texas. However, this piece depicts creatures that blur the lines of life-life and surreal. This juxtaposition of man-made and natural elements is commentary on human’s desire to constantly improve upon nature.
